1986 World Chess Championship
Compiled by Penguincw
--*--

★★★ INTRO ★★★

The 1986 World Chess Championship was between 23 year old defending champion Garry Kasparov of the Soviet Union and 35 year old challenger Anatoly Karpov also of the Soviet Union.

★★★ BACKGROUND ★★★

This match was an automatic re-match from the Game Collection: 1985 World Chess Championship. Since the 1984 (see Game Collection: 1984 World Chess Championship for games and more info) match was stopped when Karpov had a 5-3 lead, he was granted a re-match if he lost the 1985 match. He did lose, and got a re-match.

★★★ CONDITIONS ★★★

The match took place in London and St. Petersburg. It was the first time ever that an all Soviet WCC match up took place outside the Soviet Union. The format was the same as last time, with the first to 12 1/2 points winning, and a 12-12 tie benefiting Kasparov. The first game was played on July 28th, 1986.

★★★ FINAL ★★★

The last round (24) was played on October 8th, 1986. Entering the round, Kasparov led 12-11 and already retained his title. However, a draw with the white pieces would mean he would be champion and win the majority of the prize money. He did so in 41 moves.
