Franko Beni Marshall Counterattacked FTB
Compiled by fredthebear
--*--

Three straight pawn moves by Black is asking for trouble. If it leads to active piece play and a safe king, then it can be worthwhile, but the center must not crumble.

As usual, there are all kinds of uncles, strange sisters, and second cousins included in here but the blood line is e6 for Black.

Short Blog (edited): Sicilian Defense: Open, Franco-Sicilian Variation???

Chess Question
Someone played this opening against me:

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 e6
After that I played d5 and it seemed to be an easy game for me to win. I checked the chess.com analysis afterwards and it says e6 is a book move, which perplexed me because the analysis bar really didn't like black's position.

So I put the opening into Lc0 and it says after e6, if white plays d4 black is basically completely lost.

So I looked at the database, and was pretty shocked to see 17 games in the database where black actually did this. What's even more surprising is in only 5 of those games white replied with d4 (four white wins and 1 draw).

So basically my question, is how come this is considered a "book opening" and not black trolling?

2 yr. ago
You're on move 3 so almost anything will be a "move book". Just becuase something has theory it doesn't mean it's good. For example, the Latvian gambit has a lot of theory that unequivocally confirms that it's @#$%.

How can you reply d4 once you already played d4 by the way?

It has a name because it's transposed to a blunder in the Franco Sicilian defence (which is weird it would bother giving it a name at that point).

It would usually go 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 then when White plays d4 you would take as Black. But for some reason here its saying black has played 3. ... Nc6 and then saying it's still the Franco Sicilian. Probably shouldn't bother calling it anything at that point lol

The Franco-Sicilian is a lot of theoretical work for Black but it's White that chooses which way: https://chess.stackexchange.com/que...
