Black Nbd7 Does Not Roar at FTB 19823
Compiled by fredthebear
--*--

This isn't anything like a real lion. Perhaps "warthog" would be a better name, since warthogs live in holes and avoid predators...such as lions.

Fredthebear collections usually include material related to, a variation of, the main focus of the collection...especially if it's a miniature. A few Nc6 and Na6 games are included for comparison purposes.

* See Whiteshark's collection in progress:
Game Collection: 98_C41_Philidor + Black Lion

* Black ...d6 Resources: Game Collection: 1...d6. A very interesting opening with no name

* FSR Explains:
<Jan-20-22 FSR: The Hanham Variation (3...Nd7) isn't good. After 4.Bc4! Black is already in some difficulties. The most natural moves simply lose: 4...Be7? to 5.dxe5 Nxe5 (5...dxe5?? 6.Qd5! F Rhine vs NN, 2021) 6.Nxe5 dxe5 7.Qh5! g6 8.Qxe5, and 4...Ngf6? to 5.dxe5! Nxe5 (5...dxe5 6.Ng5!) 6.Nxe5 dxe5 7.Bxf7+ winning a pawn. Best is 4...exd4, but that runs contrary to the spirit of the Hanham - to defend the strongpoint on e5. And even there Black has to be careful not to lose in short order - see Polo vs Pasqualini, 1923. The thematic, and most common, move is 4...c6. Then the game usually continues 5.O-O Be7 6.dxe5 dxe5! (6...Nxe5 7.Nxe5 dxe5 7.Qh5!) 7.Ng5! Bxg5 (7...Nh6? 8.Ne6! fxe6 9.Bxh6 gxh6? 10.Qh5+ Ke8 11.Bxe6 Qe8 12.Qxh6#) 8.Qh5! The point: White wins the bishop pair. This may not seem like the end of the world for Black, but Opening Explorer shows that White scores heavily here.

White scores VERY heavily (around 80%) with the caveman move 5.Ng5!? Opening Explorer After the forced 5...Nh6, White usually plays the diabolical 6.a4!?, a trappy move that was introduced by ... Philidor! Then 6...Be7 is the most natural move in the world, but it LOSES THE QUEEN to 7.Bxf7+!! Nxf7 8.Ne6! and now either 8...Qa5+ 9.Bd2 Philidor vs NN, 1790 or 8...Qb6 9.a5! (the subtle point of 6.a4!?). (Black should play 6...exd4! 7.Qxd4 Qf6, though even this is good for White). Another way for White to play is simply 6.O-O, when once again the natural move 6...Be7 loses, this time to 7.Ne6! fxe6 8.Bxh6 gxh6? (8...O-O! is best) 9.Qh5+ Kf8 10.Bxe6 etc.

4...h6, as MacMurray played, is busted by 5.dxe5 dxe5 6.Bxf7+! Kxf7 7.Nxe5+ Kf6 and now 8.Nc3!!+- is best. Then 8...Kxe5 is suicidal in light of 9.Qd5+ Kf6 10.Qf5+ Ke7 11.Nd5+ Kd6 12.Bf4+ Kc6 13.Qe6+ Bd6 14.Nb4+. Black's best is 8...Bb4 9.Qd4! Bxc3+ 10.bxc3 Qe8 11.Nxd7+ Kg6 12.Ne5+ when White has regained his piece and is two pawns up.

Horowitz's 8.Qd5? should be met by 8...Qe8! when White doesn't have enough for the piece.

Because of all these problems with 3...Nd7, Black has tried to reach Hanham positions with 3...Nf6, when after 4.Nc3 Nbd7 5.Bc4 Be7 and Black has reached the classical setup and is doing reasonably well. But White can throw a monkey wrench into Black's plans with 4.dxe5! Nxe4 5.Qd5 Nc5 6.Bg5 Be7 (6...Qd7, favored by Petrosian, is also possible but no picnic after 7.exd6 Bxd6 8.Nc3) 7.exd6 Qxd6 8.Nc3. See, e.g., Benko vs K Smith, 1972.

For this reason, Philidor players these days usually use an even more sophisticated move order: 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 and now either 3...e5 or 3...Nbd7, again hoping to reach the classical setup after, e.g., 3...e5 4.Nf3 Nbd7 5.Bc4 Be7.

Daniil Dubov has gone his own way, reviving the old 1.e4 e5 Nf3 d6 3.d4 exd4, which he used in 2020 to win rapid games against Carlsen, Grischuk, and Karjakin. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che...
