ILN of 14.06.1851, p.11, says Anderssen-Szen was +4 -2 =1. All second round matches complete except Staunton-Horwitz (+2 -2); confirming later start (04.06?).

The Morning Chronicle, Friday 6th June 1851, p.7:

<The play in this very interesting contest was continued on Wednesday. Herr Howitz (sic), having vanquished his first antagonist, had now the perilous honour of contending with Mr. Staunton. The struggle excited very great interest among the amateurs present. Mr. Staunton is, since the retirement from the field of Mr. Lewis, acknowledged as the champion of England. Herr Howitz, well known as an ingenious player, is particularly distinguished for his power of playing without seeing the board. The game played was a very fine one, and fully justified the expectations of the spectators. After a severe struggle, which lasted eleven hours, Mr. Staunton was defeated, Herr Howitz winning the first game of the series. The remaining players well sustained their reputation. The games were good, and well contested. Mr. Williams was again successful against Mr. Mucklow, having now won three games; one more entitles him to play again. Captain Kennedy won a game of Mr. Wyvill, having thus won two games to one. M. Szen also defeated Herr Anderssen two to one. The provincial players are going on with their matches, of which we will give a more particular account when they are terminated.>

The Morning Chronicle, Tuesday 24th June 1851, p.5:

<Since our last the tide of success has somewhat changed its course. Mr. Williams, who at first won three games of Mr. Wyvill, has now lost the same number, having been defeated on Friday and Saturday last and yesterday. Herr Anderssen had also won three games of Mr. Staunton, and in the game which they played yesterday, he attained a winning position, when he committed a fatal oversight, and was checkmated on the move. Herr Szen and Captain Kennedy played their first game together (to decide their respective claim to the fifth and sixth prizes) which terminated in a draw. The play between Messrs. Anderson sic and Staunton is to be resumed on Wednesday.>
