This incomplete, haphazard list of chess books (there are many, many omissions) would take a dedicated student of the game two or three lifetimes to read through. Is chess really that important? Well, chess is a passion, a pastime the world over! There are far worse things we could be doing, like watching the perversion of television dominated by people with perfect smiles and lagging ethics or IQs. Chess makes you think, and passes the time quickly. Television fills your head full of stupid and/or immoral crap. Even the commercials are often phony, contrived, misleading.

FTB would advise the aspiring chess player to read one chapter each and every knight from an general instruction treatise or specific endgame manual. Anyone who commits to the study of the endgame will be rewarded for it often enough in hard-fought tournament games year after year. Skill in the endings will keep one in the top half of the tournament standings and maintain thy rating (although chess should be played and studied for enjoyment, for the mind's release from worldly concerns, and not for bragging rights). Over time, your enhanced endgame knowledge will produce a significant edge at the board that looms in your favor like an elephant in the room.

One will never become a master level player unless s/he studies hundreds of ANNOTATED master games during and after learning ALL the fundamentals of chess. Are you fundamentally sound in simplified positions? FTB believes Dr. Seigbert Tarrasch wrote the best instructional chess books (Tartakower, Lasker, Reti, Euwe, Fine, ... Nunn, Yusupov, Dvortsky, Muller?) still in print of all time. Of course, Julius du Mont TRANSLATED the best instructional books of all-time, hands down. However, a few easier books by Reinfeld, Horowitz, Hanauer, and/or Chernev should be read first. Learning common opening traps and frequently solving chess diagram puzzles is vital to one's growth, the forming of pattern recognition through a controlled thought process that methodically searches for various tactical targets and positional strategy concepts. Do memorizes short lists of chess principles (tips, axioms, rules of thumb) by Fine, Mednis, Purdy, etc. and be prepared to break such principles to punish the opponent if the opponent violates them first. (Certain principles like "time" or "mobility" are true most all the time, while some principles like "don't bring your queen out early" are true some of the time, depending upon the position). Do look up "The Purdy Method" and play solitaire chess. It's a big mistake for the student to study tactics, tactics, tactics, and only tactics. Make yourself a well-rounded player in the Opening, Middlegame, and Endgame.

Don't get discouraged when you lose. Everybody loses sooner or later! You must lose hundreds of times, and understand why you lost, to avoid repeating the same mistakes and form good playing habits. Think of losing as a mistake, a lesson to learn, a reminder of a previous lesson already learned but overlooked. Mastery is the consistent avoidance of making mistakes, and capitalizing on the opponents mistakes. Frequently reading books from titled writers will help show your brain the way. (Short Kindle e-books by non-masters are definitely not the answer.) Just playing games against a computer will NOT continue your improvement. We learn best/most by watching and listening to others (master writers, master players) who KNOW more than we do. Copy the best!
