  8. Chess Tournament eBooks
Ebooks at Google Books & Hathi Trust

Please inform if you find other tournaments not in the list. The books for Hamburg 1885 and Frankfort 1887 are bound into one book. Similarly, Breslau 1889, Dresden 1892 and Kiel 1893 are in the same book. If you access one of these, it is easy to get confused when paging back and forth and be in the wrong tournament.

  11. Dundee Congress 1867
Games were published in "The Transaction British Chess Association For the Years 1866 and 1867" by J. Loewenthal and G.W. Medley.

The congress took place in September 1867. It consisted of a Grand tournament, a "Scotch" tournament of eight playrs and a Handicap Tournament. For the first time in history, draws counted for 1/2 point.

The Grand Tournament had ten participants: Blackburne, De Vere, G. B. Fraser, Dr. J. C. Fraser, S. Hamel, G. MacDonnell, Neumann, Colonel Robertson, W. Spens, and Steinitz.

    The entries for the Scotch tournament were Messrs. A. B. Baxter, C. R. Baxter, Dr. J. C. Fraser, G. B. Fraser, J. A. Gloag, Colonel Robertson, P. Scott, and W. C. Spens.

The Handicap Tournament consisted of sixteen players: Class I. Blackburne, De Vere, G. B. Fraser, MacDonnell, Neumann, and Steinitz to give Pawn and move to Class LI.; Pawn and two moves to Class III.; and Knight to Class IV. Class II.—Dr. Fraser to give Pawn and move to Class III., and Pawn and two moves to Class IV. Class III.—Messrs. C. M. Baxter, C. R. Baxter, Colonel Robertson, and W. C. Spens to give Pawn and move to Class IV. Class IV.—Messrs. L. Dumon, W. Keating, P. Scott, David Sime, and T. W. Thorns. The combatants were paired by lot in the usual manner, each contest being decided by one game, exclusive of draws, being played between the respective pairs.

  17. Lasker's Secret Weapon
A collection of games where Lasker plays f4-f5, leaving a backward pawn on e4. Some annotators comment rather dramatically on Lasker-Capablanca 1914 when Lasker makes this move. In reality, the idea was part of his repertoire nearly from the beginning.

  18. Leipzig 1877, The Anderssen-Feier
The German chess federations (Schachbundes) held congresses beginning in 1861. The Westdeutschen Schachbund held 13 events from 1861 to 1880. The Norddeutschen Schachbund held three from 1868 to 1872. The Mitteldeutschen Schachbund also had three, all in Leipzig 1871, 1876, 1877. At Leipzig 1877, the Anderssen Jubilee, leaders of the local chess federations decided to form a national federation. In 1879, the national Deutschen Schachbund or DSB tournaments began and continued until 1931. The regional tournaments were discontinued after 1880. The Leipzig 1877 Mittledeutschen Schachbund was held in honor of Adolf Anderssen. He seemed to have lost none of his strength, finishing 2nd in tournament. Anderssen won a playoff game with Zukertort for second place and then lost to the first place finisher, Louis Paulsen, in a match by the score of 5 to 3 with one draw. He also played at Paris 1878, finishing 6th in a strong field. He passed away at age 60 in March 1879.
