Jun-17-03 | | drukenknight: yeah, Mason must have been one of those annoying players who never do what they're supposed to. Where do you think Tchig. messes up? He looks okay through move 6. After move 7 he is down a pawn so maybe he needs to think about attacking. On the other hand, since he already has that pin working, perhaps that is enuf compensation? So what do you think is 7....Bb4 better? or was 8...Bd7 sufficient? |
Jun-18-03 | | AgentRgent: <I can't say I see the attraction in trading off the London bishop on the third move with Bb8, however> The Knight was a valuable defender of c6 and d7, if Mason wanted to strike quickly, the trade was necessary. |

 | | Honza Cervenka: 9...Ne4 looks quite strong. Also after 10...Bb4 black position seems to be playable. |
Jun-19-03 | | akiba82: Steinitz, the world champion, gave the variation 10. ... Bb4 11. Nd5+ ed5 12. c3 Qb5 13. cb4 Re8 as leaving Black with a fair game. It was also Steinitz who recommended the, to me, strange looking 3. Bb8 in his annotations to a game where he crushed Mason with Black in the London 1883 tournament. |

 | | offramp: Odd how both bishops have been to the eighth rank by move 13. |
Dec-22-04 | | MidnightDuffer: 3.Bxb8 strikes me as a curious move; but there can be a lot to learn on these older variations. |
May-07-06 | | PolishPentium: Would not 5... d4 lead to Black winning a N in exchange for a lowly pawn? If so, surely Black would be well on the way to winning then... Then, by contrast, if the game proceeds as originally fought, could not White benefit from 12 Qg7+, rather than the indicated 12 Qc5+? The corner R seems very tasty!! (though PP concedes there is some need for White to attend to his defence first. Perhaps castling is in order...) |
May-08-06 | | Averageguy: <PolishPentium> If 5...d4 6.Qxd4. 12.Qxg7+ Kd6 13.Qxh8 allows numerous discovered checks for black with the night on c3. 12.Qxc5+ wins the queen via the game contintuation because if 12.Kd8 then 13.Qd6+ Bd7 14.Qxd7# |
May-07-08 | | Whitehat1963: I'm no longer a premium member or I would do it, but someone should place this game in the Guess-The-Move database. It's a beauty of a miniature. |
Sep-12-08 | | AnalyzeThis: Oh dear, what a crushing win. |
Nov-23-08 | | woodenbishop: Sweet win for Mason! |
Dec-02-09 | | flightsquare: Chigorin loved his knights so much, maybe he got freaked by 3. Bxb8? |
May-22-10 | | WhiteRook48: love discoveries |
Nov-29-10 | | WhiteRook48: 13 Be8+! |
Jul-27-14 | | Cedroke: Carry on wayward mason |
May-06-15 | | ShaPe1991: on the sixth move.. why didnt black take the pawn offer on e4 |
May-06-15 | | torrefan: maybe because the d5 pawn wants to go to d4 instead. But we will never know for sure since Chigorin is already dead. |
May-06-15 | | whiteshark: <ShaPe1991> After <6...dxe4 7. Bb5+ Ke7 8. Qd6+ Kf6 9. Qxb8> you would not just be a ♖ down, but you ♔ is also still in imminent danger. |
Dec-06-16 | | CountryGirl: Interesting that Mason has a slight edge over Chigorin in lifetime games played. Bearing in mind Chigorin's reputation, that ain't bad! |
Dec-06-16 | | schnarre: ...An interesting miniature indeed! |
Sep-02-21 | | Whitehat1963: Great Wednesday or Thursday puzzle after black plays 10. Nxc3. |
Oct-23-21 | | SeanAzarin: Gorin, Gorin, Gone |
Apr-23-25 | | InspiredByMorphy: 9. ...a6 gets an evaluation of -0.54 fir Black by the engine. Of course after it's own continuation of 10. Bc4 exd5 11. Bxd5 Rd8 12.Qe2+ Kf8 it gives an evaluation of =0.0 so dead even. Pretty cool though that this position seems quite playable for Black. I initially thought White's 3rd move was surprisingly effective and that Ke7 looked out of place but I was wrong. |
Apr-23-25
 | | NM JRousselle: I'm not a fan of 3 Bb8. If Black had played the simple 4... e6, he would have recovered his pawn, had better center control and the bishop pair. |

 | | PawnSac: < AgentRgent: <I can't say I see the attraction in trading off the London bishop on the third move with Bb8, however> The Knight was a valuable defender of c6 and d7, if Mason wanted to strike quickly, the trade was necessary. > my thought exactly, although I wouldn't try it a second time. He'd be ready for it. |
