Jan-29-04  Calli: The Capablanca-Corzo match, played Nov 17 to Dec 18 in 1901 was not for the championship of Cuba. Naturally, the excitement in Havana built during the match. The crowds flocking to see "the new Morphy". The confusion, I think, is due to Capablanca's comment in My Chess Career that "the victory made me, morally at least, the champion of Cuba." He obviously meant to convey his elation that he had at age 13, but the statement has been misquoted ever since.

A few months later, Juan Corzo won the Cuban Championship. Capablanca finished fourth out six players and lost both games to Corzo.

Jan-30-04  Whitehat1963: <Calli> Thanks for the clarification. Where did you get the info?
Jan-30-04  Calli: <Whitehat1963> "The Unknown Capablanca" has most of this info. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...
Mar-20-04  InspiredByMorphy: I dont think Capablanca played so bad, Corzo just played better.
Mar-24-04  drukenknight: I agree, but I think 15 Be2 is a clunker. Couldnt he have just defended that spot "as space" w/ 15 Kd2?
Mar-25-04  InspiredByMorphy: The game might have been saved by Capa here.
9. Be2 Nd4
10. Nxh7 Nxh7
11. Qxh7 Rxe2+
12. Kd1 Qf6
13. Nc3 Re5
14. Nd5 Rxd5
15. Qg8+ Ke7
16. Qxd5
and white is up the exchange with a safer king.
Mar-25-04  ughaibu: Black can also reply to 9.Be2 with Qe7 eg 10.Nc3 Re2 11.Ne2 Nd4 12.00 Ne2 13.Kh1 Qf8.
Mar-25-04  InspiredByMorphy: Blacks position is so strong 12.Nc3 doesen't help.

12. Nc3 d5
13. Qf3 Nd4
14. Qg3 Nf5
15. Qf3 Ne5
16. Rg1 Kh8

and black will soon have a queen, rook, bishop, and knight to whites two rooks, and two bishops.

Mar-25-04  InspiredByMorphy: <ughaibu> White can then reply with

14. Qe3+ Qe7
15. Qxe7+ Kxe7
16. Re1 d6
17. Rxe2+
and is up the exchange.

Mar-25-04  ughaibu: Okay, how about if black takes the bishop before taking the knight?
Mar-25-04  InspiredByMorphy: I think this is what you meant. You didnt leave any move numbers for reference. 11. Nxe2 Qxf8
12. Qxf8+ Kxf8
black is down the exchange.
Mar-25-04  ughaibu: Sorry, I meant the c1-bishop: 13....Nc1 14.Rac1 Qf8
Mar-25-04  InspiredByMorphy: 15. Rfe1+ Kf7
16. Qf4 Qc5
17. d4
white is up a pawn with a safe king.
Mar-25-04  InspiredByMorphy: <ughaibu> Nice game collection!
Mar-25-04  InspiredByMorphy: your bookmarked games look interesting.
Mar-27-04  ArturoRivera: What the heck, i dint knew that both, enrique and Juan were chess players in the corzo family
May-16-07  jellyace: <drukenknight> 15. ♔d2 ♕g5+ 16. ♔c3 d4+ 17. ♔b3 ♕b5+ and mate next move.
Sep-18-07  ScubaSig: Hey folks, I found this website looking for chess info on-line and I thought I would clear up a mistake here. In Cuba there was an Juan Corzo and an Enrique Corzo both amazing chess players but not brothers, As a matter of fact, I played against Enrique many many times throughout my childhood and always lost, he was my grandfather.
Apr-21-13  Karpova: From C.N. 8047

According to Capablanca's own scoresheet, the following moves were played:

<11...Kg7> (instead of 11...Kg8)

<26.Rae1> (instead of 26.Rad1)
