 | | Honza Cervenka: <prinsallan: 24. Rxe4? oooops.> The problem is that after 24.dxe5 Qxe5 the Rook on a1 is hanging. In fact, the real mistake and main culprit of white's defeat in this game was 22.h3. Of course, 23.Ne5 was a blunder but its relatively best alternative 23.Rae1 is not sufficient for 23...Qe7! 24.Rxe4 (24.Ng1 Nxf2+! ) 24...Nxf2+ 25.Kg1 dxe4! (25...Nxe4 ) 26.Qe3 Nd3 27.Re2 f5 with decisive advantage of black.22.cxd5 Rae8!? (22...cxd5 23.Rc2) 23.Rxe4 Nxf2+ 24.Kg1 Nxe4 (24...Nxd3 25.Rxe8+ looks quite risky for black) 25.dxc6 Qxc6 26.Re1 looks equal. |

Jul-18-07 | | Gerenense: Being all that true, it seems that white could have avoided a lot of unnecesary complications by just playing 20.Nf3. Although I agree that 21.h3?? is the losing move, 20.Qd3? just gives black tactical chances. Sometimes is better not to revisit the classics if you dont want to feel somewhat disappointed ;) |

White had a chance to win, but he blew it!
I mean, Ne5?
Don't forget Rxe4!

Feb-07-12 | | Knight13: 11. h3 wouldn't have hurt, either. It was the right time to move that pawn in order to alleviate White of the pressure. If 11... Bh5 then 12. g4 Bg6 13. Bxg6 and White does not need to fear the weakened king. |

Sep-09-15 | | justwatcher: On the contrary Saint-Amant won this one a la Karpov, through hard and quiet work aiming to accumulate material and positional advantages, but with nothing of spectacular. Staunton is a gambler, the Frenchman is not one!... That's their fundamental difference!... |

May-26-16 | | mathlover: why not 23 Rd2 ? |
|
May-26-16 | | sneaky pete: If 23.Rd2? Re1+ and wins. |
|
Apr-24-17 | | Caissanist: This was generally regarded as the worst-played game of the match. Staunton was no match for Saint Amant in terms of physical endurance, and the previous day's game had lasted nearly ten hours, with no adjournments. |

Feb-25-22 | | mifralu: According to the <London St James Chronicle And General Evening Post, 21 December 1843, p.1> Staunton resigned after < 24. ...Nd3. > 'The game is here lost without resource, and Mr. Staunton did right to give it up at once with a good grace.' |
