Joshka: Morphy was only 7 years old at the time of this game..........why is 3...a6 given his name??? Stanley must be the first strong player who played 3...a6?
Jul-01-12  optimal play: Well, I suppose because Morphy popularised that move, and unfortunately for Stanley he lost both times when he tried it.

It looks like Carl Friedrich Von Jaenisch was the first to play it successfully in 1849 but I think the first person to make reference to 3...a6 as a response to the Ruy Lopez opening was Domenico Ercole Del Rio in a treatise about chess back in 1750? So possibly he deserves the naming honours?
