Nov-18-04  Knight13: 12... Bxc3? is a mistake.
Nov-18-04  Swindler: Yup, giving up a fianchoetted bishop for a knight is a sure way to end up mated indeed. Anyway, strange that Anderssen played 2.Bc4. Even though theory was not thought up in those days he should have seen that the Bishop could be driven away from there.

keypusher: This is the game that gave Anderssen first prize in the first international chess tournament. (He had to share the money with Szen pursuant to a side deal, as Staunton gleefully reported in the tournament book.)

In this game, with 13....Bxc3?? Marmanduke Wyvill, M.P. essentially sacrifices his king to save a pawn.

Sep-01-10  birthtimes: This is why Anderssen played 2.Bc4 to the Sicilian
