Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-07-06  fred lennox: Staunton, an opening artist second to none, understood the liability of the bishop. It is too easy for it to be in a one dimensional role. In some positions naturally this isn't bad. As a rule, it is not optimum. He was aware of the strength of the fianchetto bishop and it's limitition. It easily becomes one dimensional. In this game he shows the power of the delayed fianchetto. At 8...Be7 it fills a double role of protecting the d pawn and knight. 18... g6, a fine move. protects the d pawn by preventing Nf5 and gives scope to the KB. 22...Bg7 now Staunton is ready to fianchetto, for after 26...Bd4 the bishop has a triple role, to protect the queen, to check the king and if exchanged, to create a passed pawn. Brilliant!

MissScarlett: Actually, July 16th. The London paper is the <Morning Post> of Saturday, July 19th, although the <Albion> says the 18th. Where the <Albion> has <Yesterday morning..> the actual wording is <On Thursday morning the players renewed the contest...>
