Kibitzer's Corner
Premium Chessgames Member We recently received this game designated as 'Chigorin vs Schiffers, St. Petersberg, 1895." Does anybody know if that is credible?
Aug-05-05  sneaky pete: Not credible. The game is not in the Russian 1999 collection by Soloviov and Khalifman, but is given as Chigorin vs Martinez, New York, 1889, in "KGD: classical defences" by Colin Leach. Chigorin played a 13 game match against Schiffers in St.Petersburg, 1895, but this game is not from that match. He did play the same KGD line however in a tournament game against Martinez: Chigorin vs D M Martinez, 1889.
Sep-06-05  Autoreparaturwerkbau: As Steinitz annotated 4...a6 was very unnecessary move. Black probably wanted to stay with black bishop on diagonal a7-g1.
Dec-22-08  YoungEd: Do you suppose that 5. ...b5 makes any sense? At least it's a semi-logical follow-up to the questionable 4. ...a6. Chigorin cleans up nicely at the end!
Jul-17-09  Knight13: 4...Nc6 seems to be the right move.
Jul-17-09  Knight13: See Chigorin vs D M Martinez, 1889 for an 18-move version of this game.
Sep-06-09  Dravus: Chigorin defeats Dean Martin in the Big Apple. If he can make it there ...
Oct-01-11  Shams: <Knight13> 4...Nf6 first is better. 4...Nc6 is a slight error due to 5.Bb5.

As for the game: if it's the 12th move of a King's Gambit, you're Black, and you're just now moving your king's knight for the first time, something has probably gone tragically wrong.
