Black could indeed have played 33...Ng4 in this position, as <psmith> mentions. Wolf might have seen that move, and he might have been worried about White's obvious reply, 34. Rxg6+!

If Black plays 34... fxg6 then he is poleaxed by 35. f7+ Kf8 36. Qh8+ Ke7 37. Qxb8,
