Kibitzer's Corner
May-19-09  jackpawn: Nice endgame by GM Keres.
Mar-14-11  michael104: Or is it? According to Blunder and Brilliancies, by Mullen and Moss, Golombek actually resigned after 59...Bb2. That might seem justified in view of the (possibly false?) game continuation given here, but Mullen and Moss say that, according to Euwe, Golombek actually had a draw. Picking up from the game as listed above, White could have played 64.Kc3 Kf4 65.Kd4 Kg4 66. Ke5 Kxh4 67.Kf6 with a draw. I don't see anything wrong with this analysis. Does anyone else?
Oct-15-14  Wilhelm: Certainly 59...Bb2= is a blunder, 59...Bc3! (zugzwang) is the right move. Accurate calculations were not the strongest point back in the 40,50's, other mistakes were: A) 42....Kf6? allows 43 e5!= B) 48...Bc5? 49. Kd2 then Kd3= C) 50...Bb6? 51 Nf2 idea Ng4 D) 51. Nd3? --51. Ke2= E) 54...Ke5? 55. Ne3=

  Jonathan Sarfati: <Wilhelm:> Do you have any evidence for your claim? Keres was a very accurate calculator most of the time. But 59.... Bb2? was definitely hasty.
