plang: 6..dxc with quicker development and play on the queen file is more popular than Short's 6..bxc. 10..0-0 was new; 10..Ng6 had been played previously. After 16 e5?! Short felt that he had an advantage; 16 Qg5 or 16 Nxb6 were alternatives. 17 Rxe5..Nc6 18 Re1..Ba5 19 Nc3..Rad8 would have been very good for Black. The players spent a lot of time after the game looking at 20 bxb6..cxb 21 c5..Bd5 22 cxb..Nd4 23 bxa..Nf3+ 24 Kh1..Nxe1 25 Rxe1 where White has some compensation for the exchange but Black has better winning chances; still this may have been White's best continuation. With 27..Qg5? Short missed a great chance to further his attack: 27..Nc2 28 Re2..h4 29 Kf2..Kh6 (29..Bd3 30 Rd2..Bxf1 31 Qxc2!) 30 Nc1..e4 31 fxe..Bxe4 32 Kg1..Ne3. 37 Qe8+ was good enough for a perpetual as 37..Kh7? would have lost to 38 Qe4+..Qxe4 39 fxe and White's queenside pawns are too quick.
