plang: The game transposes to a main line of the Symmetrical English. Nowadays White usually plays 7 d4 where the game often ends up in a Hedgehog formation. Gruenfeld felt it necessary to prevent d4 with 9..e5!?; current practice is to play 9..Nc6 10 d4..e5 or 9..a6 10 d4..cxd again with a Hedgehog position where White has used to tempi to achieve d4. White could have considered playing 11 Nf5 so as to answer 11..exf with 12 gxf. Perhaps 12..Nd7 or 12..Ne8 would have been an improvement. Taking the pawn with 15 fxe..dxe 16 Nxe5..Qd4+ 17 Kh1..Rad8 would have given Black good compensation for the pawn. After 15 Be3 the gambit 15..Ne6 16 fxe..dxe 17 Nxe5..Bf6 was worth considering; instead 15..f6?! led to a very passive position. 24..Qb8 cleared a flight square for the bishop so that if 25 Ng6 then 25..Bd8 26 Rg3 (threatening 27 Qxh7+)..hxg 27 fxg..Bd7 and Black appears to survive. Black perhaps should have tried 36..fxg 37 Rh8..Qa7 38 Rg8..Nf6 39 Rxg7+..Kc8 40 R7xg5..Rh7+ 41 Kg2 where he at least has some play for the pawn. 47 Qe8! was a pretty finish.
