plang: Game 1 of their second round match in the World Championship tournament; Ivanchuk also won game two to clinch the match. He went on to defeat Shipov before being eliminated by Nisipeanu in the fourth round. Ivanchuk is known for his fresh approach to openings here choosing the rare 9 f4 over the usual 9 f3 and following up with the new idea 10 h3. It is not easy to identify where Black went wrong; perhaps 14..Bxc4 is an idea. 20 Na4! was very clever; the alternative 20 hxg..Bxg5 21 Nd5..Na3 22 Qf2..Nxc2 23 Bxg5..Nxd4+ 24 Kb1 would have been more complicated though White would still have been better here as well.
