Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-08-04  RonB52734: 4...Nge7 isn't exactly the silver bullet that the database would have you think. has 16 games to this move, with 4 wins (apparently all youth games if I'm reading it correctly), 6 draws and 6 losses for white after black's 4th move putting the king's knight in front of his liege. In fact, the preferred continuation for white is 5.Be3 or 5.0-0, although both of these have resulted in wins, losses and draws, so subsequent play is surely a factor. Also seen are 5.Bg5, 5.Bd2 (both drawing) and 5.Nc3(losing). The game shown here (Khaziyeva Dinara vs Luraschi Julia, 1999 with 5.c3 losing) is the only example of 5.c3 in the database. My (totally inadequate) program -- Microsoft Chess, which came free with my computer several years ago -- likes 5.0-0 (value 0.113), 5.Be3 (value 0.104) and 5.c3 (value 0.033) when run out to 9-ply. I'm interested to see any other analysis.
Jul-01-06  Paladin88doug: This is a great dog fight by Black. I am fairly interested in the Ruy Lopez, but my weakness is building solid positions... I am pretty good at building an attacking position, but I am still learning. I liked Black's play in the game.
