GrahamClayton: Nice attack by Alekhine. Maybe Black was too committal in exchanging pawns with 8...cxd4? 8...b6 as played in Timman vs Karpov, 1967 may have been better.

fredthebear: 15.Nxf7 KxNf7 is met by 16.Ne5+ and the White queen will gain back the sacrificed material after QxNh5.

If Black tries 16...NxNe5, it generates a kingside attack by 17.fxNe5+ Nf6 18.Qh5+ Kf8 19.Qxh7, etc.

Alekhine was a combinational giant who could really tear up a kingside.

kingscrusher: <GrahamClayton>Yes good point - it opened up the e-file as a nice semi-open file for White to use, which sets the stage for the later soft-spot sacrifice. Engines consider 8...cxd4 a major inaccuracy.
