Sep-13-06  mack: For all you crazy kids with smothered mate collections.
Sep-14-06  sneaky pete: <mack> Thank you, that's a nice one. Fortunately for us black didn't bother to play the spoiler Qe4-e1+xe5+.
Sep-14-06  Fischeristhebest: 32.Nf7+ Kh8 33.Nh6++ Kh8 34.Rd8 Qxe6 35.Rxf8+ Ng8 36.Nf7+ Qxf7 37.Rxf7 was also playable.

  tpstar: Note the immediate 32. Nf7+!? Kg8 33. Nh6+ Kh8 34. Qg8+?? loses to 34 ... Nxg8 and the Rook covers f7, so White played 32. Rd8! deflecting Black's Rook. Philidor's Legacy won't work if another defending piece besides a Rook covers the Queen sacrifice, or else there's some means to prevent the Knight from delivering mate (like the opposing Queen). The game continuation was best, although <sneaky pete> is right about the spoiler.
Feb-03-15  MarkFinan: Just been having a go on one of my tactics trainer apps and this game showed up. It took me around 5 mins to see the Qg8! smothered# move (which I see wasn't played because Adams's opponent resigned), because I was just looking the back rank mate. Got my estimated elo rating up to 1824 though... 🙋🙋

Just saying.

Oct-03-15  Alexander Belov: 11..b4? Why?

  marcusantoinerome: <Alexander Belov> In "Chess in the Fast Lane", Mickey says:

"A theoretical suggestion here is 11...c5, but the move played is also sensible if followed up correctly."

Unfortunately, that doesn't answer your question.

  marcusantoinerome: Rd8 is a beautiful way to neutralize the Black rook guarding f7, and threaten another way to win besides Philidor's Legacy that Black must deal with. A good tactic to remember.

  WTHarvey: Ends on a White mates in 4.
