plang: 5 Be3 is a flexible modern alternative. 5..0-0 invites queenside castling by White and Nunn considers it to be an inaccuracy. 6..Bg4 is an invitation to transpose to the Classical Pirc after 7 Be2..Nc5 8 0-0 but after the stronger 7 Ng5! the bishop looks misplaced (..h6 weakens the kingside considerably). 8 d5 was new; 8 h3 had been played previously. After 10 h4 Black's position already looked inferior as White had gained several tempi for his kingside attack. Khalifman pointed out that accepting the pawn with 11..hxg could have led to 12 h5..Nxh5 13 fxg..Bxg4 14 Be2 with excellent compensation. 18 Qd2 and 19 Nf4 aimed to eliminate the only defender; the knight on h5. This would have led to a quick win, ie. if 19..dxe 20 Nxh5..gxh 21 Rg1. 19..b3!? sacrificed the queen to stop the attack though Adams never had sufficient compensation. After 20 Bb5! with the idea of Be8 Black's position quickly collapsed.
