Jun-09-07  willyfly: I saw 21...♘g3+ 22 hxg3 hxg3+ 23 ♔g1 but then I played 23...♖h2 with the idea of ...♔e7 ...♖ch8 etc
Jun-09-07  craigdc: What a fantastic mate - didn't spot it, but amazed by its brilliance.
Jun-09-07  AlfieNoakes: Yeeeessssssssssss!!!!!!!!! I popped my saturday puzzle cherry and got this one! I think it was a relatively easy saturday puzzle though as the knight move was just begging to be made. :D
Jun-09-07  VargPOD: Also a first saturday puzzle solved for me. So, must be easier than regular saturdays.
Jun-09-07  goodevans: I've been having a bad week this week, but today's solution just leapt out at me in seconds. A few seconds more to check that white had no defence and it was all "solved" in well under a minute.

I guess I'm adding my voice to those who've already expressed that this was easier than usual for a Saturday.

Jun-09-07  openingspecialist: wow easy 10 secs Ke7 is the key move but really was it that hard to find? Ng3+ was obvious and even if Ke7 wasnt possible id still play it otb. Thanks <CG.com> your daily puzzles kept me on my toes today and I won an nice pawn sack which had what a lesser player would consider a rook sack. This was my highest rated opponent win.
Jun-09-07  kbaumen: Yay, my first solved Saturday puzzle.
Jun-09-07  Gilmoy: First thought: Wow, that's a lot of pieces. Fun!

Qa8, haha. She somehow wormed her way behind an R *and* a B.

Second thought: Wow, this looks like Rubinstein's Immortal. White has KIAB (King in a box) syndrome, often fatal.

I see the Greco theme: 21.. Ng3+ to deflect h open. As it forks the Q, it can't be declined. 22.hxg3 hxg3+ 23.Kg1, and Black is one move short of two-Rook Damiano. Dare we risk the goofball 21.. Ke7!? Surely White could snuff it -- 22.g3 looks enough, to clear a flight square at g2.

So rearrange the K lift to the end: 23.. Ke7. Egad -- White has no answer! He can't defend h1 or h2 -- has no double on h (his Be3 is pinned) -- can't make space by moving the Rf1, since his K is still trapped on 1 by his own Q. White has only 1 spite check: 24.Bxc5+ Rxc5 -- but that just reduces to one-Rook Damiano.

21.. Ng3+ 22.hxg3 hxg3+ 23.Kg1 Ke7 24.Rfc1 (two-Rook ...) Rh1+ 25.Kxh1 Rh8+ 26.Kg1 Rh1+ 27.Kxh1 (... Damiano) Qh8+ Kg1 28.Qh2+ Kf1 29.Qh1+ Bg1 30.Qxg1#.

Jun-09-07  Marmot PFL: This one I could for once get fairly quickly, as it looked more like a Morphy era game than one between 20th century grandmasters.
Jun-09-07  ARival: "How to Beat your Dad at Chess" by
Murray Chandler - deadly checkmate 9
[from Karpov v Taimanov Leningrad 1977]
gives some more examples of this idea.
Great book for teaching juniors how to attack.
Jun-09-07  kevin86: I loved this one!!! I saw the sharks in the water with the queen at a8-and the rook at h8. Little did I know that a quiet king move would release the hounds to mate via h8 to h1.

White tried to block the queen with pawns on the long diagonal, so she detoured from the northwest corner to the northeast corner. The poor king had to wait like a sitting duck on the southeast corner.

Ok,you may not have liked my analysis, but I hope you liked my metaphoric zoo.

paulalbert: I was sure that Ng3+ was starting idea, but missed the quiet Ke7 which allows the start of the checking sacs which enables the Q to mate at h2, an idea with which I am completely familiar. I guess I shouldn't feel too bad since a strong GM like Baburin also overlooked it. Paul Albert

Domdaniel: I have to disagree with almost everyone here. Yes, it's easy when posed as a puzzle -- when you know there's a win to be found. And the two sac patterns -- Ng3+ to open the h-file, plus the 'conga-line' rook sacs on h1 to get the Queen across -- are both very familiar, even obvious.

But in a game it's easy to overlook the quiet move ...Ke7, and think -- as Baburin obviously did -- that blocking the c5/g1 diagonal with Be3 would hold.

I know Alex Baburin and I know his games. He very rarely falls for a cheap tactic. This one -- despite being based around obvious themes -- is actually hard to spot. In a game.

Jun-09-07  wolfmaster: My very first saturday puzzle solved!Who knows, maybe Sunday will be solvable...
Jun-09-07  GREEKPINCH: spotted in about five seconds. When you see major opposing pieces flirting with the King you know its a sacrifice combination that's coming.

al wazir: I saw the sac 21...Ng3+, of course, but my natural timidity prevented me from recognizing that black could win by sacrificing two (2) ♖s in addition.

Did Baburin overlook the mate threat, or was he simply busted? What else could he have played instead of 21. Be3? If 21. Ne3, then black wins with exactly the same combination he played in the game. 21. Bf4 gives away a piece, and after 21...Nxf4 22. Qc2/Qd1/Qd2 Nh5, black is again threatening to win with the double ♖ sac. And if 21. Rf2, then he wins with no sacs at all: 21...Ng3+ 22. hxg3 hxg3+ 23. Kg1 gxf2+ 24. Kf1 Rh1#.

playground player: Saw everything up to Black's Ke7, and after that, nothing. First time I've ever seen that mating pattern, that chain of Rook sacrifices with the Queen coming down for the finish. I'll have to remember it.
Jun-09-07  thedoyle: first saturday puzzle i've ever gotten =)
Jun-09-07  Magic Castle: The forceful move Ng3 is easy but the silent K move is rather difficult to find.
Jun-09-07  Fezzik: BTW:

Full sportsmanship points for allowing a GM to play Rh1+ rather than resign after 21...Ng3 or playing past move 25 (thus making it *not* a miniature)!

GM Baburin remains one of my favorite players who never quite made it to the "super" GM level.

fm avari viraf: I was knowing this beautiful theme of clearance some 35 years ago & now it was Baburin who became the prey to this tactical combo.
Jun-09-07  nolanryan: I just encountered this theme in the Reinfeld 1001 Combinations book. The King move actually glared at me as the only way to get the queen to h2.
Jun-09-07  schnarre: Crunchtime, bigtime!
Sep-28-11  iking: Position after 21.Be3
