Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-19-05  mr. nice guy: Can anyone explain why Anand does not play the simple 34.Qxd8 check? Is this a major blunder or am I overlooking something?
Premium Chessgames Member
WannaBe: Probably overlooked it. Shredder9's analysis have white mating by move 42.

34... Rf8 35. Qd7 Qxc4 36. Ra7 Rg8 37. Bxe6 Qe4 38. Qf7 Qf5+ 39. Bxf5 h6 40. Be6 Kh7 41. f5 Rh8 42. Qxg7#

Sep-19-05  aw1988: Probably an incorrect game score.
Sep-19-05  aw1988: Good god <WannaBe>, you're Speedy Gonsalez.

WannaBe: I, however, trust <aw1988>'s human intuition/instinct more than my silicon software. =)
Sep-19-05  aw1988: Don't humor me. :P

It is after all a free rook.

WannaBe: I was probably running my analy. while you were typing! :) But I still trust your knowledge!!
Sep-19-05  mr. nice guy: Tks all for the input. I have the same game score from another source so it's probably correct. Just chalk up another "darn, I missed that!"
Sep-19-05  aw1988: Well, thank you. When I'm not blundering pieces my guesses (being thorough) are usually right.

  WannaBe: <mr. nice guy> You're a class A player! wow... I'm a class Z player =(

Still nice to have meet you!

Sep-19-05  mr. nice guy: Tks <Wannabe>. However I must inform you that a class A player is what a master has for breakfast!

tpstar: ChessBase 8.0 confirms this gamescore and result, including the unique 14 ... Rf7!? plus the oversight 34. Qc3? because the Rd8 was truly unprotected. Therefore Black got away with the gross blunder 33 ... dxe3?? which should have lost a piece; correct was 33 ... Qxe3. Good pick-up.
Sep-19-05  notsodeepthought: <tpstar> It's a very good bet that 33 ... Q:e3 WAS indeed played (in other words, the game score is incorrect), because after 34 Q:e3 d:e3 35 Nc3, the resulting position is identical to the one achieved with the sequence starting with (the nonsensical move) 33 ... d:e3. So the score has to be revised only with regard to those two moves (two by each player).

tpstar: <notsodeepthought> Yes, your sequence looks much more realistic while achieving the same position. Good pick-up. =)

Nice game by Black, especially the clever mate at the end.

An Englishman: Good Evening: It appears that CG has fixed the game score, and suddenly the game makes much more sense.
Jul-03-15  shivasuri4: What is 42.Nd6 about? Can't Black just play 42...Rxd6?
Mar-13-20  Eisenheim: GOTD? For Whom the Bell Tolls
