plang: Anand's idea of 9 a3 and 10 b4 has not been repeated and seems suspect given the weakening created on the queenside. 17..Nb6?! and 19..Nc4 seem very risky taking an important defender away from the kingside; 17..f5 was an alternative. 30 Rxc4!..Qb6+ 31 Rc5..Qxf6 32 Qf4 would have led to an easily winning game for White. 34 Kf2! would have saved a whole tempo over the game continuation leading to a trivial winning endgame for White. After 45 h5? Anand had sqandered his advantage; 45 g3..g5 46 h5 he would have retained some winning chances. Lautier, however missed his chance with 45..gxh? after which he was lost. The drawing line was 45..f4+ 46 Kd3..gxh 47 Kc4..f3! 48 gxf..Kf4 49 Kc5..Kg3 50 Kc6..Rb8 51 Kc7..Rh8 52 b7..h4 53 b8(Q)..Rxb8 54 Kxb8..h5 55 Kc7..h3 56 f4+..Kxf4 57 Rxh3..Kg4.
