plang: This was Shirov's pet line at this time. Anand and Shirov played three games with this line over a month and a half (this was the first) with Anand winning one and the other two being draws. Polgar had played 17 Qg3 against Shirov a month and half earlier and had won a nice game. 17 Qf3 was new but it was quickly apparent that it did not lead to an advantage for white. Orlov felt that black would be better in the ending after 21 Qxd6..Qxd6 22 exd..Bf5. Also after 21..fxe? 22 f5..Bc8 23 Qd5+ white would have a powerful attack.

plang: 2 rounds earlier Ivanchuk had played
8 c3 against Shirov and an exciting draw had resulted (game is not in the database).
