Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-03-07  Maynard5: This is a very unusual type of endgame, in which Anand sacrifices the exchange to win two pawns. This leads of course to a material advantage for White, particularly since Black's rooks are not able to penetrate White's dense mass of central pawns. The critical sequence in the middle game begins with 38. Rxc6! After 40. ... Rc7, Black loses a pawn, but note that after 40. ... Rd7, Black would be nearly paralyzed, while White would win the d-pawn anyway after 41. Nf4. Anand must have planned this rather imaginative breakthrough sometime in advance.
