Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-15-04  LIFE Master AJ: A brilliant win by Anand ... that has (perhaps) unduly influenced theory about this line. (After 17.Nc5, most programs evaluate this position as being a slight - but solid - advantage for White.)

plang: This was game 1 of their match from the World Championship tournament that Anand won 2-0. 13..Nb6 was new; 13..Rd8 and 13..e5?! had been played previously. 18 Bb1?! worked out poorly weakening the queenside as b4 could not be protected by Rb1. 18 Rfd1 (Anand), a4 (Seirawan) or 18 Ne5 (Rogers) were alternatives. Anand felt that Nicolic's decision to liquidate with 25 Nxc6? was a critical error since it opened the position for Anand's bishop; he recommended 25 Qb2 instead with a roughly equal position. 27 Qb2? would have lost immediately to 27..Rxf3 28 gxf..Nxd4. 30..Rd2! ignored the be pawn to start an attack on f2 highlighting the superiority of his bishop. 32 Rf1 would have lost to 32..Rxf2!. 33..Rdxf2! initiated a nice attack leading to a forced mate.
