Feb-08-07  JustAFish: Karpov has a reputation for being drawish. In this game, however, he turns down two opportunities to repeat the position and plays on for the win. Great fighting spirit!

plang: This was game #5: Karpov had a one point lead and played this game close to the vest. 12 Ne4 was new though it seems less active than the previously played 12 e4. 20 Nxg5..Qe5 would have won for Black but Karpov felt that 20 Qd4..Bg7 21 Bb2..Nh5 22 Qd3..Bxb2
23 Qh7+..Kf8 24 Qxh6+..Ng7 25 Rab1..Bc3 26 Nxg5 was an interesting alternative for White. Karpov avoided 43 Ke4..b3 and if (a) 44 Rxb3?..Bxd4 and if (b) 44 Nxb3..Rxe3 45 Kxe3..Bxb2 with equality. Anand did not play 50..Rc2?! 51 Rxb3 when the d pawn is dangerous.
