  InspiredByMorphy: I dont understand Anderssen's 19.Bg5 I like Morphy's 8.Qg6
Apr-11-04  shr0pshire: I believe the reason for 19. Bg5 is for development. White's intention was to bring the rook on Ra1 into play, but he needed to develop first. To help restrict the black king's movement. The white king was coming under fire, and I believe that Anderssen's thougts were to get some mobility for his pieces/ attacking chances (as this is a romantically played chess game), and as a possibility to provide some sort of defense later.

InspiredByMorphy: I just re-evaluated the position and saw that Morphy threatened 19.Bxg3 Anderessen must have considered his loss of the exchange inevitable and decided to counterattack on the opposite wing and go out swinging by temporarily obstructing the g file.
Dec-16-04  Zembla: I'd think 19.Bf4 would have been better. On g5 the B was just going to be chased away by Morphy's h pawn. Anderssen of course didn't retreat the B, but initiated a futile attack ignoring what Morphy was doing. After 22...hxg3 Morphy had it in the bag.

beatgiant: <I'd think 19.Bf4 would have been better.>

The reply 19... Bxf4 20. gxf4 Re2 21. Nxe2 fxe2+ 22. Ke1 Qg1+ 23. Qxg1 Rxg1+ 24. Kd2 Rxa1 looks like it would mop up. Am I missing something?

Dec-17-04  Zembla: <beatgiant>No, you're right, but there must be something better than what Anderssen did. I just can't find it.
Dec-17-04  sneaky pete: White was lost after 16... Rhg8. The horrible 17.Rh2 .. is to guard against the threat .. Bc5 18.Qxc5 Be2+ etc. 14.Be2 .. was his last chance to save the game. 10.Nxd5 Nc6 11.Bb5 .. would have given him good play. 8.Qe2 .. was played in a later game from the same session Adolf Anderssen vs Morphy, 1858.
Dec-17-04  Zembla: <sneaky pete>Thanks for putting this game into better focus for me. As to Anderssen's awkward 10th move, I didn't like it when I saw it but never thought one would have to go that far back to find game saving moves for him.
Feb-27-08  JimmyVermeer: Morphy had a faster win on his 22nd move if he played 22... Qxg3 23 Qc6+ Ke7 24 Re1+ Kf8 25 Rxe8+ Bxe8 26 Qxe8+ Kxe8 27 Re2+ Kd8 28 Re8+ Kxe8 29 Nb6 Qg1#.

On Anderssen's 22nd move, he should have tried Nb6+. He would've still lost, but it would've taken 3 turns longer. His 13th and 14th moves were also crap. On his 14th move, he should have tried Be2, and on his 13th move he should have tried h5.

Jan-20-09  WhiteRook48: something makes me think Anderssen likes exchanging all those pieces off.
Jul-15-09  tentsewang: Anderssen's game tangle up while Morphy: my favorite chess player went eating like a snake.
Feb-25-11  Llawdogg: Just a quick King's Gambit blitz-type game between friends after a grueling match.
May-13-16  RookFile: Capa said that he got really good when he learned to not even consider certain moves. I'm pretty sure Capa would not have considered a plan for white involving Qa7.

perfidious: <RookFile> Was going to respond that the alternative 19.Bf4 Bxf4 20.gxf4 Re2 looks to be an unpleasant retort, but on reading the foregoing kibitzes, <beatgiant> um, beat me to it.

Joshka: Was this their first encounter? Morphy was so much younger than Anderssen, Anderssen should have been a more even opponent had their ages been equal.
