Mateo: Delightful and amazing ending. Marathon man was a pawn down but had a slightly better position because of the advanced pawn on the 'e' file. The natural 108.Qxa5? loses. White wins a pawn but gives Black a very important tempo to invade with his King. The general idea hidden in the forest of the variations is : the King will support the 'e' pawn and threat mate connected with the Queen. 108.g5! should be a draw. For instance, 108...Kd6 109.g6 Ke6 110.g7 Kf7? 11.Qf2+.

perfidious: Robert Huebner's second at Biel, W G Raines, described this game thus in his article on the event written for the British Chess Magazine:

<....For perhaps 100 of these moves the game is turgid rubbish, then the position became sharp and Castro went astray. Christians might find it spiritually useful to play through the score as a Lenten exercise, but I doubt that it will ever appear in print.>
