Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-13-06  OJC: After Steinitz played 18.Qf2? Bird missed the win:

18. ...Nh3+! 19.gxh3 Rg6+

(i) If 20.Kf1 then ... Qxh3+ 21.Ke2 Rg2 and Black is much better.

(ii) If 20.Kh1 then ...QxQ and mate follows.

(iii) If 20.Qg2 then ...Bxf3 and Black is much better.

During the endgame I think Bird could have tried 40. ...f4 instead of Re4+.

Apr-03-08  Knight13: Just tell me that Steinitz knew what bishop of opposite color meant in the endgame.
Dec-27-10  Llawdogg: Steinitz drew this game with little difficulty.
Dec-27-10  Llawdogg: Steinitz was clearly playing for a bishops of opposite colors end game that he knew he could draw. Bird must have been quite upset about missing the win.
