Mar-09-04  wonderboymyth: why did Bird resign here?
Mar-09-04  suenteus po 147: Maybe because 16.dxe5 Bxe5 17.Nxe5 Qxe5 18.Bd4! skewers the queen and rook. And if Bird tries anything cute like 18...Qxe4 (threatening 19...Qxg2#) then 19.f3 wins the rook for certain. Bird has essentially thrown away a pawn and allowed ingress in exchange for a knight move that has won him nothing. 15...Nf4 was a blunder and he knew it, so he resigned rather than letting Blackburne ride an extra pawn to victory.

Chessical: I cannot see why White resigned. Is this an incomplete score?

tpstar: <Chessical> Good pick-up! You would expect Bird to play Bird's Defense, right? The actual game went 3 ... Nd4 4. Ba4 Bc5 5. d3 Qf6 6. Nxd4 Bxd4, then the game score ends at move 15 with this comment (0-1/37). There is no Ruy Lopez in that tournament with 3 ... Be7, so how this entry made it into the db may always be a mystery. Here's the link:
Apr-04-08  Knight13: <so how this entry made it into the db may always be a mystery.> Played between different player(s), perhaps?
