Jan-13-11  Madmartigan: Why on earth didn't black promote to rook? Missed a chance to go down in history for having mated two full queens down...
Jan-13-11  sevenseaman: < AgentRgent White missed the Win!

45. Qcd4!

If: 45...c1=Q+ 46. Nxc1 Qxb2+ 47. Qxb2 Nxb2 48. Kxb2

If: 45...Qxa5+ 46. Ra2 Qd2 47. Bh1 Qd1+ 48. Qc1 Qxc1+ 49. Nxc1 Bc8 50. Bxd5+ exd5 51. Qxd5+ Kb8 52. e5 > on the spot AR. 45. Qcd4 is the move missed by the opulent White. Criminal ending up a pauper with riches to throw.

<Madmartigan> R or a Q, its really only pedantic.

Jan-13-11  Chesschatology: I have a feeling that Blackburne would have been rather dangerous at Blitz!
Jan-13-11  sneaky pete: White resigned after 45... Qxa5+ so underpromotion on move 47 was never even an option in the actual game. The tournament book notes that (apart from the obvious 45.Qcd4 ..) 45.Qc1 .. and 45.Qfxc4 .. are also winning, whereas 45.Qfe3 .. and 45.Qh6 .. lead to a draw. "Weiß findet aber den selbtsmörderischen Textzug."
Jan-13-11  David2009: The GOTD title perfectly describes the outcome of the game.

(White to play and lose, 45?)
All one could wish for further would be for one of the players to be named Holmes or Watson....

Jan-13-11  dregoz: I think so 45.Qcd4!you are right ,AgentRgent , but white missed the win because bishop must go sacifice before on f2 42.Bxd5!!quickly! 42...Bxd5 43.Qf2+! Kb7 44.h8Q .

kevin86: Promoting to a rook or bishop for strickly cosmetic reasons is IMHO,more arrogant than elegant.
Jan-13-11  atakantmac: Chigorin:''Oh,fuk'' :)
Jan-13-11  Marmot PFL: I definitely take the draw in that position.

chrisowen: Chigorins centre calls for leading pawn race down flanking green start ng6 Henri points out h8 shields triangle. Revelation to Joseph is ooh brother qfd4 soggy it was firm rejoinder qxa! Naf hoping fashion detour blockade gating knights h4 and promotion hofmiser queen look domitius until followup bare Mikhail down jack all.

Penguincw: Promoting to a queen and mate. Very rare I'm assuming. Especially when white had two queens against black's one.
Jan-13-11  mecking93: Oh my God! It was a blitz, wasn't it?
Jan-14-11  brainzugzwang: Doesn't 45. Qb4 win as well? Seems even more forceful than the other Q moves in forcing Black to trade off his Q while White still has c1 well covered.
Apr-13-11  blitzermat: 45.Qb4 and 45. Qcd4 both seem like they win for white. How dicey it is to play a queen down like that, and still win!
Apr-13-11  Mozart72: Chigorin's 50% win against Blackburne's 56.25% win shows that the final score 0-1 is correct, with or without an extra queen.
Apr-13-11  jeep.abs: 42.Qxc4-bxc4.43.Nxb4-Qxf3.44.h8=Q.....d'ont take mate
Jan-02-12  Tigranny: This pun is one of the best I've seen. Very funny game to play too.
Jul-04-13  kia0708: U....N...B...E...L...I...E...V...A...B...L...E game !

ps.
Chigorin is a genius.

Jul-02-14  mruknowwho: This stings for White, especially considering he had a draw (perpetual check) with 45. Qf8+
Aug-29-15  Mr. V: There has never been a more Victorian game of chess played.
Nov-15-18  bkpov: White threw the towel prematurely. 43. cxb3 was a draw only for black through perpetual. 45.Qcd4 may have given a win to white.
May-06-19  Marcelo Bruno: The mate with Queen is a pure one, and it doesn't matter even if the Pawn promotes to Rook.
Nov-05-19  ndg2: Two blind pigs. But since they are queens and not rooks that would be blind sows, right?
