Dec-26-02  ughaibu: Smyslov again. It's almost as if he's playing a different game.

Domdaniel: Smyslov had a particular genius for unbalanced late-middlegame positions, such as R+pp vs B+N, or three minor pieces vs Queen. In his typical games, no forced win exists, but the material imbalance + maneuvering + initiative leads to an eventual win.

Later, Kramnik and Carlsen have showed similar abilities.

perfidious: <Dom> Had not really thought of things that way, but it is quite true.

An entertaining example of this characteristic is the following: Botvinnik vs Smyslov, 1954.

Domdaniel: <perf> You read my mind - that's one of the games I was thinking of. A real classic.

perfidious: <Dom> That game is one I well remember from Sergeant's work on greats from the past.

Domdaniel: <perf> I came across it in the 1980s: I had an early chess engine, Psion Chess, which included 50 classic games, of which that was one.
