  Honza Cervenka: Smyslov outplayed Botvinnik here in great style. If 20...Nd5, then 21.exd5 Qxb6 22.dxe6 Qxe3+ 23.Kh1 Qc5 (23...Qb6 24.e7 Rfe8 25.Qd5+ Kg7 26.Qe6 ) 24.e7 Rf7 25.Ng5 Rxe7 26.Bd5+ Kg7 27.Rf7+ Rxf7 28.Ne6+ winning the Queen. If 25...h6 instead of Botvinnik's 25...Qxa4, then 26.Rff6!
Jan-15-06  danielpi: Smyslov's record with the Reti is nothing short of terrifying...
Mar-20-07  PositionalBomber: <danielpi> Surprisingly true. He lost 4! out of 69 total. This game is a great example.

Fusilli: I just played this game on "Guess the move". I guessed Smyslov's 28th move wrong. My choice was 28.Rxa8. I was awarded full credit for 28.Rxa8, though. However, while I do see why 28.Rd7 wins (see <kashparov72c5> post below if you wonder), I don't see how 28.Rxa8 (my choice) wins! If I got full credit, I would assume white should win immediately with 28.Rxa8. Does anyone see it?
Oct-01-08  faulenzer: Maybe after 28. ... ♖xa8 or 28. ... ♘xa8, White can play 29. ♕f6, and I don't see any good defense to ♘f7 and ♕h8#. E.g., 28. ... ♖xa8 29. ♕f6 ♕b3 30. ♘f7 ♕xe3+ 31. ♖f2 ♖a1+ 32. ♔g2 ♕xe4+ 33. ♔h3

Fusilli: <faulenzer>: I think you are right. Thank you.
Sep-10-16  bharat123: I tried 27.Qxa4 in 'Guess the move' with the idea 27..Rxa4 28.Rxe8 Nxe8 29.Ne6 threatening Rf8 mate. Black cannot avoid mate without giving up the Night. But I was awarded zero points. Is there any refutation to my variation. comments please
