Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-08-07  Maynard5: An example of Botvinnik's relentlessly scientific style of play. By move 18, Black has gradually freed his position, while White is becoming cramped. White's advance with 22. c4 fails to achieve anything, but after the exchange on move 24, both sides have backward pawns, on b3 and c6. However, White's isolated pawn on d4 is also potentially vulnerable, giving Black a small but significant edge. White's 27. h5? is clearly a mistake, since this makes it much easier for Black to play against the pawn on d4 (with 30. ... f5).
