Sep-21-06  Resignation Trap: Botvinnik's journal entry before this game:

"Must, finally, regulate your time!

Up to move 25-30 work and work! Don't allow counterplay!

Preserve your strength. Let's go!"

Sep-21-06  Resignation Trap: Botvinnik's post game assessment:

"He caught me, of course - instead of a game it turned into an analytical fragment. Don't play this variation any more!

I played decently, but was saved only by a big reserve of time - worked things out slowly."

Jun-11-13  zydeco: 15.Nc6 is a new move with the idea 16.Bf4! driving away the b-pawn's protection. 15.Qg3 had been played previously.

plang: After having lost games 7 and 8 to fall behind 2-1 Bronstein was satisfied with a draw even though he had White. In this highly theoretical line Bronstein played 10 Qf3 which he referred to as the Stahlberg Attack though Stahlberg only played it once. White had some successes with this line in the 30s but it now no longer played. Bronstein prepared 15 Nc6 for the match but it has not been repeated. 26 a5, keeping the rook on the a-file, was an alternative but after 26..Be5 27 Ra4..d3+ 28 Kd1..Rxc6 29 Bxc6..Rxb3 Black has excellent counterplay. 33..f4 34 Bxd5..Kxd5 35 Bxf4..Kc4 36 Bd6..Kb5 37 f3..e3 38 Kd3..Kxa6 39 f4 would have been good for White.
