Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-23-06  percyblakeney: It doesn't look as if Gunsberg will win this around move 40...
Apr-23-06  cloim: Looks to me like Chigorin is playing too passively.

Checked it on my computer and found:
black has advantage to move 54, where it's dead even.

55...Kb8 was a blunder, should have taken the draw
75. Kc4 was a better move for white.
77... Re3+! would have drawn by 3 time repetition!

oao2102: Chigorin throws away a clear draw here...

RookFile: This is just silly. Chigorin is <ahead> a pawn in a rook and 4 pawns vs. rook and 3 pawns ending, and loses.

offramp: The last few moves are instructive:

74...Rb3 is the only move to draw. It gets rid of the dangerous pawn on b7. After say 75.Rxc2 Rxb7 76.Ke6 Rb1

the game is drawn because White's pawn is too far advanced; his king has no shelter in front of the pawn, which there would be if the pawn was on d5.

In reply to 74...Rd3+ White should have played 75.Kc4, which runs the rook completely out of squares.

After 77.Ke6 Black had to check by ...Re3+ to reach the same drawn position as after the 71st move.

But he took the dreaded ♙b7

no doubt expecting 78.Rxc2. But his world was rocked by the clever 78.Rh1!
