But, of course, Chigorin wouldn't resign on move 16 because he would lose his face.

Oct-07-11  lipschutz: Chigorin actually played the illegal 35…Kxg7 but, as he apologized, Steinitz refrained from forcing him to make a move with his King. However, Steinitz was annoyed Chigorin played on for a further 15 moves in a hopeless position. (NYTribune, Mar. 4, 1892)
