Aug-16-05  aw1988: ninth
Aug-16-05  buRnINGbeNd: I guess "ninth" is the new "first"?

This is an interesting way to play against the Scheveningen that I am not familiar with. My systems consist of the Keres and the Classical with Be2 and Be3. Anyone have any thoughts and explanations on whites plans in using the line in this game?

MichaelJHuman: I see a lot of openings that move the king to the H file, such as in this game.

Would someone enlighten me on the theory behind the move?

Aug-16-05  jahhaj: <MichaelJHuman> White is planning f4 and doesn't want give Black any tactical possiblities on the a7-g1 diagonal. With the king still on g1 White is always going to worry about ♕b6.

I don't know anything about the specifics of this variation (I don't play the Sicillan) but, as you say, you see the same idea in a lot of openings.

Aug-16-05  patzer2: Black's 21...Qd5? is too passive to adequately defend against White's attack. Instead, 21...Rd2! provides sufficient counterattacking chances for Black to equalize.
Aug-16-05  khense: For Patzer 2 - Looks to me that black has no other move than RD2.
Aug-16-05  TheSlid: If 21...Rd2, then 22.Nxg7+ Kf8 23.Nh5 looks very unpleasant. Did I miss something?

  al wazir: <TheSlid: If 21...Rd2, then 22.Nxg7+ Kf8 23.Nh5 looks very unpleasant.> 23...Qxg2#. How about 21...Rd5? If 23. Qc3 then 23...exf5. If 23. Qe3 or Qe2 then 23...Rxf5. If 23. Qb8+ then 23...Rd8. So 23. Nxg7+ Kf8 24. Nxe6+ fxe6 25. Qxe6 Qxe6 26. Rxe6 Kf7 27. Rae1 is the best white can do.

  TheAlchemist: Eleventh!

<al wazir> If 21...Rd5, as you said, White can repeat with 22.Qb8.

So, what do you think about 22.Nxe7? Then 22...Kxe7 23.Qe2 (or Qe3) Rhd8 and the position looks balanced.

In your line, 22.Nxg7 wins 3 Pawns for the piece, and a temporary bind, but is that enough in the long run?

Aug-16-05  aginis: whats wrong with 21...Rd2 22.Nxg7+ Kf8 23.Qg4
if 23...Nh5 24.Nxe6+ should do it
Aug-16-05  patzer2: <al wazir> Thanks for providing the answer to <Theslid>'s question (i.e. 23....Qxg2#). <aginis> After 21...Rd2 22.Nxg7+ Kf8 23.Qg4 h3! 24. Qg3 Rg1! , the knight is pinned and Black wins.
Aug-16-05  WMD: Why not Pheasant Plukker?
Aug-16-05  kevin86: White avoided the obvious twopenny trap:31♖xf4 ♖d1+ and mates in two. With two pawns ahead,a win seems rather obviou and soon for white.
Aug-16-05  jamesmaskell: A Plukking good game if you ask me!
Aug-16-05  mack: I'm not a pheasant Plukker,
I'm a pheasant Plukker's son,
I'm only Plukking pheasants
'Til the pheasant Plukker comes.

al wazir: <TheAlchemist: If 21...Rd5, as you said, White can repeat with 22.Qb8.> True, but that's better for black than the game line.

<So, what do you think about 22.Nxe7? Then 22...Kxe7 23.Qe2 (or Qe3) Rhd8 and the position looks balanced. In your line, 22.Nxg7 wins 3 Pawns for the piece, and a temporary bind, but is that enough in the long run?> I don't know, but again, it's better for black than what actually happened. The same for your variation. I think both 21...Rd2 and 21...Rd5 are playable.

tamar: I was talking to Euwe, Euwe-Plukker.
Who did Euwe think I was talking to?
Aug-16-05  ajile: It looks to me that Black left his king in the center too long. He got plukking pwned (as the gamers would say)

:o)

tamar: Getting away from the puns for a moment... I checked out <patzer2>'s line and it is true.

21...Rd2 sets up mating possibities on g2 and forces an almost immediate draw.

22 Ne3 Ne4 (even more forceful than 22...Ng4 by taking away c3 from White) 23 Qxg7 Bf8 24 Qxh8 Nf2+ 25 Kg1 Nh3+ is a perpetual.

Aug-17-05  TheSlid: <al wazir> & <patzer2> Interesting lines, thanks for pointing out the counterattack on g2. Has anyone "fritzed" this position after 21...Rd2? I have the software at home only.
Aug-17-05  mack: <how many puns do you reckon we can get?>

Plukk knows.
