Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-27-05  JustAFish: I'm baffed why Euwe doesn't play 28. Qh6+ Kg8 29 Qg7# There continue to be opportunites to play this sequence for several moves.

Am I missing something? Was this game fixed?

Dec-27-05  aw1988: Yeah... this one is a bit odd.
Dec-27-05  syracrophy: What's going on with this game? Why didn't white played 28.Qh6+? Isn't Euwe a grandmaster to see a mate in 2? I don't understand this! It's a basic mate in 2! What a bis shame!

Pawn and Two: Not only is it mate in two at move 28. It is also mate in two at move 29 and again mate in two at move 30!

One of these errors would be hard enough to understand, but three in a row does not make any sense.

Is the game score correct? Does anyone know what happened?

Dec-28-05  sneaky pete: The game score is wrong. Steiner actually played 27... fxg6.

The tournament book gives 28.exd5 .. an exclamation mark and notes that 28.f7 Qxa3 29.exd5 Qe3+ is winning for black, but I don't see how. Maybe 28.f7 Rf8 29.Qh6 Qxa3 30.exd5 Qe3+ is meant, but here white can play 29.exd5 .. immediately (threat 30.Qd4+ ..; after 29... Qe3+ 30.Qxe3 Rxe3 31.dxc6 bxc6 looks approximately equal).

Premium Chessgames Member We fixed it. Thanks for submitting the correction form.
