nasmichael: By 39.Bg5, Machigielis' early kingside activity shows itself again, with a small team pushing towards the black king. Watch how the bishop e8 tries to hold that knight at e5. Does it work?
Jun-22-11  JJL: The immediate 20. a4 is premature because Black can develop some interesting complications with 20.... g5. If then 21. axb5 gxf4 puts White under a tough attack. Or 21. fxg5 f4 accomplishes the counter-play for Black.

The nice point of 20 Qf1 is that it gets Black's Queen out of its agressive position.

Jun-22-11  JJL: After 21. ... Qe8 Black's attack is over and White gets to exploit the extra Pawn. The only other possibility I see for Black is 21. ... b4 but White can try 22.c4 to get out of the bind on the King side.

The original plan of 21. ... g5 is now simply refuted by 22. fxg5.
