Apr-01-05 | | JohnTal: I recommend 28 ... Ne4 ++,
29 K any ... Nd6, 30 ed6 ... Qd6 leaves Benko with 3 pawns for the piece, 2 connected Q side pawns leaves Pal with a very and winnable endgame. On move 31, Benko could play Rc5 and start advancing his a pawn to a a5, then to a4. He could then double his rooks moving from c5 to a5 - forcing Bobby to watch the passed pawn. With my line - albeit without computer analysis, Bobby would have a tough time winning this game. Any computer analysis to my line - what am I missing? |

 | | TheAlchemist: <JohnTal> Just a quick check: 28...Ne4 29.Ke2 (only ove, otherwise it's mate in 1) Nxd6 30.Rb1 (better than the immediate exd6) Qc5 31.exd6 and white seems to be better (31...Qxd6 32.Rxb7) I don't know what black should play now. |
|
Apr-13-05 | | JohnTal: I re-examined my earlier suggestion and agree that Ne4+ needlessly opens up the position - Benko's Kt and d pawn tie Bobby's king up in the center. Anyway, replaying from Benko's 28th move against Fritz 6, I crushed Bobby with this line: 28 ...Ra2
29 Bg3 ...a5
30 Qh5 ...Rf8
31 Rh1 ...a4
32 Qh3 ...b5
33 Rg1 ...a3
34 Qh4 ...Bc6
35 Qh3 ...Rb2
36 Nf5 ...ef5
37 e6 ...g6
38 e7 ...Ra8
39 e8(R+)...Be8
40 Rh1 ...Ne4++ 0-1 Fritz resigns.
I know that Bobby would have played much tougher - g4 was needed to open up the position for his pieces. I'd have to try my variation against other options, but I like my strategy of keeping Bobby bottled up and then finishing him off. |

Jun-08-05 | | cade: Haha Benko should have taken the draw here. Poor Benko must have been sore after this game. |
|
Jun-08-05 | | chesswonders: Really, what a turn around game! |
|
Jun-08-05 | | Marvol: As people have noticed, 28...h6? is not the best move. After running Fritzy and Crafty side by side at this move, they conclude that both 28...♖a5-a2 A♘D 28...♗d7-c6 are winning.
There are some crazy outrageous lines in there, amazing... Like this one (check also the subline):
Crafty 19.19: 28... ♗c6 29. ♗c4 (29. ♗g3 ♖a2 30. ♕h5 ♗e4 31. ♕f7+ ♔h8 32. ♘xe4 fxe4 33. ♕xe6 ♘d5+ 34. ♔e2 ♕b3 35. ♔f1 ♘e3+ 36. ♖xe3 ♕xe6 37. ♖xe4) 29... ♘e4+ 30. ♔e2 ♘xd6 31. ♗xe6+ ♔h8 32. exd6 ♖e8 33. ♗xd4 ♕xd4 34. ♔f1 ♕xd6 35. ♗f7 ♖xe1+ 36. ♔xe1 [-2.61 12ply])
(From there it's mate in 7 starting with 36...♕b4+)
There must be a dozen more of these wild lines in the position that win for Black. |
|
Jun-08-05 | | Basti81: Fischer was indeed lucky to win this one. But didn't Capablanca say something like: "Luck always favors the better player" ? (sorry I don't remember his exact words) |

 | | TheAlchemist: <Marvol> Would you mind checking 27...Ba4, please? |
|
Jun-08-05 | | Jack Kerouac: As Robert once stated about P-K4,"Best by test." |
|
Jun-08-05 | | KniGtAME: lol.Well the person to make the last mistake is usally gonna lose. Especially if it leads to mate! |
|
Jun-08-05 | | kevin86: It looked great for Benko,he even spurned several opportunities of a draw. Alas, his attack came up one move short-and BF's one move long. A line-opening queen sacrifice that led to sudden defeat for Pal. |

Jun-08-05 | | Rocafella: A very nice finish from Fischer but Benko did squander a few chances of a draw... |
|
Jun-08-05 | | ughaibu: Curacao 1962, fixed, for sure. |
|
Jun-08-05 | | Calypsoleon: any thoughts on 18..Nc3 for black |
|
Jun-08-05
 | | TheAlchemist: <WannaBe> Was that computer analysis? In an earlier post I suggested that 28.g4 leads to mate, after 28...Na2 29.Kd1 Rxc2 30.Bxc2 d3 31.Bxa4 Qb2. Or am I missing something? I was wondering if there's a better defence for White? |
|
Jun-08-05
 | | TheAlchemist: <Calypsoleon> I don't know, 18...Qb4 seems better, as it prevents the king from escaping via e1. <Rocafella> Even worse, he missed a few probably forced wins. Has anyone read Benko's book about his life, games and compositions? Does he mention this game? |
|
Jun-08-05 | | InspiredByMorphy: <Marnoff Mirlony> <Call it lucky if you want. Fischer planned a brilliant attack and fought on with resilience. The victory was well deserved.> Why didnt black take the draw ? 19. ...Qb2+ 20.Kd2 Qb4+ 21.Kc1 Qb2+ or 25. ...Nc3+ 26.Kc1 Na2+ 27.Kd1 Nc3+ |
|
Jun-08-05
 | | TheAlchemist: <InspiredByMorphy> Because his intuition probably, and correctly so, told him he was winning. He unfortunately chose the wrong continuation. Benko's play was superb up to move 26. On move 27, as I pointed out before, Fischer blundered horribly with 27.Qh4, but he got away with it. You can find quite a lot of sample variations in other posts above. I am pretty certain time pressure was a major factor. |
|
Jun-08-05
 | | keypusher: Because he was winning! |
|
Jun-08-05
 | | OhioChessFan: After 28..Bc6 29.Nc4 Ne4+ 30.Ke2 Bb5 looks good for Black. If then 31.Nxa5 Bxd3+ 32.Kxd3 Qd2+ 33.Kc4 Qc3+ 34.Kb5 (34.Ka4 Nc5#) a6+ 35. Kb6 Qb4+ 36.Kc7 Qc5+ 37. Ke7 Qe8#. <MrTibbs>, per the above line
32 cxd3 Qd2+ 33 Kf3 Qxd3+ 34 Be3 and I can't find a winning line for Black. |
|
Jun-09-05 | | Rocafella: <TheAlchemist> Yes there were a few forced wins in this game that Benko. I think he missed these party because of Fischer's beard. After all, look at his page! Have you seen the size of that thing? Wouldn't you be intimidated!?! |
|
Jun-09-05 | | aw1988: Kasparov's teeth, Fischer's beard. What next, Euwe's glasses? |
|
Jun-09-05
 | | TheAlchemist: <Rocafella> Lol, although I don't think Fischer had a beard back then. Maybe Benko put on his trademark sunglasses around move 27 so he wouldn't have to see his beard, but it had an unwanted side effect - he didn't see tactics as well :-) |
|
Jun-10-05 | | Rocafella: <TheAlchemist> I am guessing that these sunglasses were bright pink! Oh, and by the way, I think that I have sorted out my internet problem so you all may still have to put up with me for another couple of years :-) |
