Aug-08-14 | | Howard: Would anyone care to post some engine analysis on either 24.Rd5 or 24.Nc5 ? Apparently, the former would have virtually led to a forced win---or so I've heard. Mednis, by the way, analyzed the endgame phase of this game back in 1977 in his monthly endgame column. |
Nov-10-14 | | HOTDOG: Mednis suggested 42.Ke5! (instead of 42.Nxa7??) and now 42...Ng2 43.h5 gxh5 44.Kxf5, or 42...Nd3+ 43.Kf6 Nxf2 44.Kxg6 f4 45.Nd4 and White holds on |
Apr-03-15 | | Howard: To repeat the inquiry from last August...did Mednis miss a forced win on the 24th move? |
Apr-08-15 | | A.T PhoneHome: Fischer's chess games with Black pieces are wonderful to watch. I think his play with Black was compared to that of Korchnoi's. <Maybe, but I'm pretty sure the same line is mentioned in that 1970's collection of all of Fischer's games, that came out when the best computer on the market was an abacus.> Hah, made my day even if it's an old comment! |

 | | keypusher: <Howard: To repeat the inquiry from last August...did Mednis miss a forced win on the 24th move?> Yes. Way back when <dukersterdog2> (I guess there was already a <dukesterdog>?) posted <24. Rd5 Rxe7 25. dxe7 Nc6 26. Nd6 Qxd6 27. Rxd6 Re8 28. Rd7 f5 (+3.45)> I was looking at 24.Rd5 f6, using only my own feeble brain, and wondered if 25.Rc5 was the solution. Black can't take the rook, obviously, and if 25....Rxe7 26.dxe7 Re8 (26....Qf5 27.Rxc8+ Qxc8 28.Nd6) 27.Nd6 Rxe7 28.Rc8+ mates. If 25....Rdd8 26.d7 Nxd7 27.Qxd7 and Black can't take the rook or the queen. But that should be checked with an engine, obviously. |

Apr-08-15 | | RookFile: I know that Fischer sometimes played 1...e5, but it seemed like an odd choice for this game. |

 | | keypusher: <RookFile: I know that Fischer sometimes played 1...e5, but it seemed like an odd choice for this game.> One of my favorite factoids about Fischer's 11-0 sweep is that it did not include any Sicilians, for either color. Addison was his only other opponent that opened 1.e4, and they played a Ruy Lopez. Kingscrusher did a very good video about it. W G Addison vs Fischer, 1963

May-12-15 | | jerseybob: keypusher: His game against D.Byrne is a sort of Closed Sicilian/K.I.R., by transposition. |
Jul-14-15 | | offramp: This was round one. If Fischer had lost this he might have been shattered and ended up 0-11. |
Jul-14-15 | | DWINS: I had Stockfish 6 and Komodo 9.1 analyze the 24th move and they both give the best line as 24.Rd5 Rxe7 25.dxe7 Nc6 26.Nd6 g6 27.Nxc8 Nxe7 28.Nxe7+ with a white advantage of 2.07. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Odd how this one game inspires so many inspired game titles. 8...Nxe4 felt fishy, and the simple and traditional 8...d5 intuitively seems better. |
Jun-22-22 | | optimal play: <offramp: This was round one. If Fischer had lost this he might have been shattered and ended up 0-11.> More likely he would have forfeited round 2 and insisted on playing round 3 in a broom closet, after which he would win all his remaining games. |

Jun-22-22
 | | FSR: I never knew that Mednis missed a win in this game! That certainly could have changed the course of history - as would a draw for that matter. |
Jun-22-22
 | | FSR: I see that "the late" (not literally, but luckily for us, as far as this site is concerned) LIFE Master apparently submitted this pun over a decade ago. A record? |
Jun-22-22
 | | FSR: It appears that W Zili vs Hug, 1989 (evidently 10 years, 3 months and 8 days from pun submission to GOTD) may hold the record. The present one only took 10 years, 2 months and a day. My own "personal best" is a measly 9 years and 20 days. Short vs A A Lopez, 2008. |
Jun-22-22 | | goodevans: Of all the alternative puns for this game I think <OCF>'s is by far the best. <optimal play: [...] More likely he would have forfeited round 2 and insisted on playing round 3 in a broom closet...> Brilliant! |
Jun-22-22 | | goodevans: Here's the position after SF's suggested 24.Rd5 Rxe7 25.dxe7 Nc6 26.Nd6 Nxe7 27.Nxc8: click for larger viewI think Black can resign that.
Alternatively 24.Nc5 Rxe7 25.dxe7 Re8 26.Rd8 f6 27.Rxe8+ Kf7 28.Rg8 Kxe7 29.Rxg7+ also gives White a pretty comfortable edge. click for larger viewSo move 24 really didn't do Mednis any favours. |
Jun-22-22
 | | OhioChessFan: 24. Rd5 seems obvious. One big problem with 24. Qg5 is that it allowed f6 with tempo, giving Black an important tempo he needed to get the King in the game. |
Jun-22-22
 | | OhioChessFan: The pun is pretty good, although I agree with <goodevans> assessment. |

Jun-22-22
 | | HeMateMe: I was sort of hoping for an actual return of the real AJ. |
Jun-22-22
 | | ChessHigherCat: Clever pun. Fischer missed an opportunity to blunder with 34...Ne7. It's so boring finding the best moves all the time. |
