fredthebear: Oh, the contrast! White's sweet center pawn duo opening has a theoretical advantage over Black's small center. The clash converts to a closed center, somewhat Advance French-like. Black wisely played 13...BxNf3 before the closure to avoid being stuck w/a bad bishop.

Black gets the better of it by establishing permanent wing penetration and connecting the rooks on the second rank. The White Ng4 is overworked in the final position. There's plenty of action remaining in this middlegame, but Black has the upper hand positionally.

White's mild excursion on the queenside beginning 15.a4 backfired, yielding an active space advantage for Black. It was just the pawn break that Black needed from the watchful Hippopotamus formation.
