Jul-31-04  PAWNTOEFOUR: K-F8,R-D8 mate!!........if Qxf7,r-d8+,kxd8,QxQ!....you know i felt bad at first cause i didn't see this right away, but then i didn't feel too bad...i guess suetin didn't see it comin eitha! lol
Aug-22-05  notyetagm: A textbook example from Geller in using the Isolated Queen Pawn (IQP) position for winning tactics. Here Geller plays an excellent little combination based on the thematic d5! pawn advance. Geller plays 20 ♗xf7+! and Black resigns because of the two variations 20 ... ♔f8 21 ♖d8# and 20 ... ♕xf7 21 ♖d8+! ♔xd8 22 ♕xf7. I particularly like the <removal of the guard> 21 ♖d8+! in the second variation.
Aug-22-05  notyetagm: Note that if Black tries to defend his tender f7-square with 19 ... ♕g6 instead of 19 ... ♕f6, then White wins with the <X-ray> shot 20 ♗xf7+!, the same winning move as played in the game. Now 20 ... ♕xf7 leads to the same winning line given above, 21 ♖d8+! ♔xd8 22 ♕xf7. After 19 ... ♕g6 Black can also try 20 ... ♔xf7 but that also loses to 21 ♖xe7+! ♔xe7 22 ♕xg6, resulting in a position which Fritz 6 Light assesses as being +18.62 .

19 ... ♕g6 20 ♗xf7+! and then:

20 ... ♕xf7 21 ♖d8+! ♔xd8 22 ♕xf7
20 ... ♔xf7 21 ♖xe7+! ♔xe7 22 ♕xg6 +18.62

Aug-22-05  notyetagm: This game is a great advertisement for the IQP as a weapon of attack. Black makes seemingly reasonable moves but has to resign on move 20.
Aug-22-05  EmperorAtahualpa: I would say 12...Qd8, 13...Nd5 and 14...Nc7 are all bad moves.
Aug-23-05  notyetagm: Fritz 6 Light really didn't like Black's 18th move, 18 ... exd5??.
