BLACK TO MOVE

In this position Black made a horrible blunder: 23...Nxd5??, forgetting that his rook couldn't leave the first rank on account of the reply Rf8 mate. So that after 24.Qxd5+ he had to resign.

Correct was 23...Bh3! with approximate equality.

I should like to quote a very interesting paragraph written by Yasser Seirawan in his excellent book "Five Crowns" (coauthor Joanthan Tisdall):

« Why do grandmasters blunder?
Why do jockeys fall off horses?
It's all part of being human. As the stakes get higher, the tension increases. As the stress builds, as the nerves twang, mistakes flow like a river».

« Better to point out how remarkable it is that so few blunders are made in chess by the grandmasters. The old adage is "He who blunders last loses". Though sometimes the blunder is so big that the first one is also the last».

fredthebear: Thank you for the diagram and the post <Gaito>. Black also needed to get his Bc8 off the back rank and not squander center pawns.

Mastery requires the elimination of mistakes. Here's a Dan Heisman link to go over with chess students: https://www.chessclub.com/uploads/c...
