Feb-28-08  Knight13: There's no life in this game. Just a smooth, theoretical draw.
Sep-02-10  soothsayer8: Yeah, this game was a draw from about move 20, if not sooner. Clearly this is what Steinitz wanted, it's hard to stop a grandmaster of that caliber from at least drawing if he wants to. I'm surprised Gunsberg didn't put up more of a fight though.
Nov-09-11  AnalyzeThis: When you're black in a must win situation, you need to play something like the Dutch Defense to get a dynamic game.

sachistu: Last move of last game! But wrong! The move was actually 41...Bh5 (see BCM/1891/p93 and various references Pope cites on the chessarch website). The move ...h5 is in Chessbase and has been erroneously copied to a number of sites. I'll submit a correction slip.
Apr-06-19  wordfunph: from Chess Life 1982 January: But Steinitz had the last word. He revealed the reason Gunsberg had played so listlessly in the 19th game - to make money. Gunsberg had confided to him after the game, Steinitz said, that he wanted the game to end in a draw because he had cabled his newspaper a half hour into the opening to say that Steinitz had retained his title. Gunsberg had given up his chance for the world title to score a journalistic coup.
