Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-14-04  InspiredByMorphy: Harrwitz plays very well, but what if Anderssen played 11.Ngxe4 ?
Premium Chessgames Member
tamar: Do you mean on move 12? 12 Nxc3 looks okay to me, but I would like to see Anderssen open the f file with 14 f3. 14 f4 can be ignored with 14...h6, but 14 f3 h6 15 fxe4 keeps the initiative.
Sep-19-04  InspiredByMorphy: <tamar> I agree. Your line looks like it wins.

I flicked through the game and I thought white was lost from here. In fact I was just going to type 'White should have just resigned here'. But I let the engine look at it before I commented, and I was right! Qe2 in this position and white should resign. So, anyone?? What level of play elo wise is this in today's money? I just picked this at random, it could be whites worst ever game, but I don't think this is master chess.. will someone please prove me wrong because that's what I want. I don't know much about these old players, but from what I do see, I see nothing that should have players/play like this classed anywhere near 2500 rated chess.

tamar: 2500 players starting from a Fischer Random position. That's about right.

They might not even do as well.

Jan-07-14  MarkFinan: You show this game to someone who doesn't know who played it and they'll tell you it's far from top level chess. If I can see it then???
Mar-28-18  yureesystem: I am surprise master of attack Anderssen didn't see 14.f3! ( instead of 14.f4?) 14...exf3 15.Nxf3 Qb6+ 16.Kh1 h6 17.Nh4+ kh7 18.Nxf5 wins a piece and still has a dangerous attack. 14.f3 opens the f-file and black lose if capture on f3-pawn, 14.f4 doesn't open the f-file. Noticed the black king is restrictive and can't escape so easily, this is something an attacker would noticed, definitely Tal would of played 14.f3!.
Mar-28-18  Boomie: <yureesystem: 14.f4 doesn't open the f-file.>

Neither does 14. f3. After 14...Qb6+ 15. Kh1 e3, white is in a bit of trouble.

The Ng5 is hanging and the QB has no moves. It will take white a couple of moves to untangle and by that time black should be able to consolidate.

As usual, I haven't used an engine so there may be a simple refutation.

  Honza Cervenka: <Boomie> 14.f3 Qb6+ 15.Kh1 e3 runs into 16.g4 Kxg5 (16...Bd7 17.Qf7+ Kxg5 18.Qxg7+ with mate, or 17...Kh6 18.Nge4 +-) 17.gxf5 Kxf5 18.Ne4 Nd4 19.Bxe3 with huge advantage of white.

  Honza Cervenka: 17.Qe2 was a mistake. Better move was 17.Qxb5! with idea 17...Bxe4 18.Qe2 Bf5 19.g4 Bd7 20.fxe5 (diagram)

and black has nothing better than 20...Kh7 with perpetual check 21.Qe4+ Kg8 22.Qd5+ Kh7 etc.
